CYANIDE RECORDINGS

In December 1999, Jay and Josh (otherwise known as Bulletproof) got the backing and help of a close friend and began their own record label. It would be a year before the label would master its first release, but when it hit, Cyanide instantly established itself globally as a label with a unique sound and vision.
One that could compete with the well established UK stables. A place where artists were in control of their music.
After hearing the first release, Cyanide was picked up by DJ LEE / VINYL DISTRIBUTION, the leading global distributor of drum & bass in those times.
Cyanide’s rule was quality over quantity.
The label was also to be a production house for NZ’s emerging talents, but soon enough some of the finest up and coming producers around the world were sending in their tunes.

Since then, Cyanide Recordings has released some of the biggest names in the dance floor / Neurofunk scene… Names like Konflict / Kemal & Rob Data, Gridlok, Phace, Misanthrop, Concord Dawn, DJ Optiv, State Of Mind, Apex, The Upbeats, Dose, Teknik and Agent Alvin to name a few.
Now distributed globally by the leaders in worldwide drum & bass distribution, ST Holdings, sporting a back catalogue spanning over 30 12” vinyl releases, 2 LP’s, countless downloads, and new recent adventures into the sound of Dubstep, Cyanide Recordings is internationally and locally recognised as one of the true icons of Aotearoa D&B.

BULLETPROOF

2008 was an enormous year for New Zealand’s BULLETPROOF with the release of his second full-length album “Dark Times – Desperate measures”. Combined with a hectic worldwide DJ schedule, and countless hours spent in the studio working on tracks for some of the scenes leading labels, its fair to say 2008 has been very busy for the one they call Jay Cyanide. 2009 is upon us, and the old saying “No rest for the wicked” is in full effect at Cyanide HQ. Over the last few months Bulletproof has been hard at work forging his new take on the sound and exploring the endless possibilities his music creates. A new vibe, a new sound and a new outlook musically has lead Bulletproof to drop some of his finest works to date.
With tracks being headhunted by some of the biggest names in the scene on a weekly basis, Bulletproof has once again left his mark upon many a dance floor the world over, proving time and time again why Bulletproof is hailed as one of the innovators of funk in Drum and Bass.

Staying true to his roots, Bulletproof has time and time again earned the respect of DJs and producers the world over. His uncompromising love for the sound of DJ orientated, dance floor drum and bass tunes, and true passion and understanding for the sound of rolling funked-out drum and bass has seen Bulletproof maintain his place amongst the leaders of the sound.

2008 was also an exciting year for collaborations, having released the hugely popular “Dark Times” video featuring Bulletproof, Mindscape and Tiki Taane and clocking up studio hours with the likes of, Phace, Misanthrop, Survival and Nymfo.

Back home 2008 also saw the formation of SIDECHAIN. Comprised of Bulletproof and close friends, Teknik and Cern, SIDECHAIN is a musical meeting of the minds dedicated to pushing the musical envelope of neuro-esque drum and bass. Dutch purveyors of funk, SYNDROME RECORDINGS have secured the Sidechain project exclusively for their label.

THE UPBEATS

IF YOU’RE THE UPBEATS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN INSPIRATION IS GOING TO HIT, OR LEAVE YOU CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR WITH LAUGHTER-INDUCED ABDOMINAL MUSCLES PAINS.

AND IN THIS PARTICULAR SCENARIO, THEIR INSPIRATION WAS A WHISPERED BRAZILIAN GHETTO STORY RELATED TO THEM BY A FRIEND. THE STORY OF THE CAVERAOS (ENGLISH TRANSLATION: BIG SKELETON), A SUPER-TANK FULL OF NAVY SEAL TRAINED BRAZILIAN GANG MEMBERS KNOWN TO TERRORISE THE FAVELAS OF RIO DE JANEIRO, OR ON GOOD DAYS, DISTRIBUTE NIKE SNEAKERS AND FREE CABLE. SOUNDS FUCKED UP RIGHT?

ANYWAY, AS YOU’VE PROBABLY GATHERED BY NOW, THE UPBEATS WERE SUITABLE TAKEN WITH THIS STORY, AND HAVING ALREADY FLOATED THE IDEA OF A HAUNTED-HOUSE ALBUM, DECIDED TO TITLE THEIR THIRD ALBUM BIG SKELETON, OUT OF HOMAGE TO THE CAVERAOS; AND HORROR IN GENERAL.

BE IT THE HAUNTED CLICK’N’BASS SOUL OF ‘BONES’ (FEATURING NED WORBOYS OF HARBOUR CITY ELECTRIC), THE SUB-GRINDING, STREAM-OF-CONSCIOUSNESS NARRATIVE DRIVEN BREAKBEAT INSANITY OF ‘CAROUSEL’ (FEATURING MC KEMO FROM GERMANY), THEIR SPEAKER-RUPTURING FORAY INTO DUBSTEP ON ‘MACABRE’ (CO-PRODUCED BY THE MYSTERIOUS CRUSHINGTON) OR THE DRUM’N’FOLK ATMOSPHERICS OF ‘THROUGH THE NIGHT’ (FEATURING AWARD-WINNING COUNTRY SINGER JESS CHAMBERS); BIG SKELETON LIVES IN EQUAL BALANCE BETWEEN THE HEADPHONE HEADSPACE AND THE MINDSET OF THE CLUB, WHICH IS A RARE AND TERRIFYINGLY BEAUTIFUL COMBINATION IN DRUM’N’BASS. AND THAT’S NOT EVEN TOUCHING ON THE COLLABORATIONS WITH STATE OF MIND OR JAPANESE RAPPER CARDZ.

THIS SEPTEMBER WITH BIG SKELETON, THE UPBEATS WAKE THE DEAD, AND THE WHISPERED TERROR WALKS ONCE AGAIN. DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.
